CST 334 Weekly Journal #7

Weekly Journal

This week was about the topic of persistence. I learned that persistence means exploring the basic foundation of elements that help enable long-term data storage on computer systems. Operating systems managed persistent storage devices like hard drives and RAID systems. RAID systems distribute data across multiple disks to provide redundancy and improve I/O performance that would address issues like disk failures each with their own type of trade-offs in terms of capacity, reliability, and throughput. Learning how this was managed was interesting to learn and how the trade-offs were returned was very shocking as well. In addition, reading further into the chapters began to explain how examining the architecture of input and output (I/O) devices and how they play a pivotal role in computer systems. Furthermore, it showed how important it is for rotational delay in accessing data. All in all, this week's readings were a great read and I learned a lot from these chapters on the importance of data management and the role persistence plays in ensuring data and system reliability.
